Phenomenal Remix of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt”

Friday, February 12th, 2016

Trent Reznor has been offering the individual tracks of his music for other people to remix for a while now. I stumbled across this truly awesome Andrej Prebanda remix of “Hurt” on YouTube:

Yeah, I like the Johnny Cash version as well.

Shoegazer Sunday: Vidulgi OoyoO’s “Infinity”

Sunday, February 7th, 2016

Korean psychgazer band Vidulgi OoyoO’s “Infinity” is one of those songs that starts slow and keeps building on the same basic groove, a bit like Lemon’s Chair, though Vidulgi OoyoO has a harder and faster edge.

Sunday Shoegazer: Blackstone Rngrs’ “Frozen Echo”

Sunday, January 24th, 2016

For your Sunday dose of Shoegaze, here’s Austin’s own Blackstone Rngrs (yes, they spell it that way), another Saint Marie Records band, with “Frozen Echo,” another entry in the “Hey, we have no video budget, so how many digital effects can we cram in” sweepstakes.

Korean Girls Try American BBQ

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

Here’s the sort of cross-cultural appreciation I can get behind:

A tad long, but worth watching. Especially since they save the brisket and pork ribs until the end…

Interview With Spinal Tap Manager Ian Faith

Sunday, January 17th, 2016

Here’s a modestly amusing link for a cold Sunday morning, a video interview with Spinal Tap manager Ian Faith on faking his own death, why “Big Bottom” is better than “Stonehenge,” and who he could make a lot of money off of were they to die.

Keep you expectations modest…

Alan Rickman, RIP

Thursday, January 14th, 2016

British actor Alan Rickman has died at age 69.

I’ve never seen the Harry Potter films, and while I enjoyed him as Hans Gruber in Die Hard and the Metatron in Dogma, my favorite of his roles was Galaxy Quest, as a British stage actor trapped into pretending he was an alien by the beliefs of other aliens.

Alas, he shall not be avenged by Grabthar’s Hammer…

Shoegazer Sunday: The Secret Machines’ “Nowhere Again”

Sunday, December 13th, 2015

Honestly, this is more of a mainstream rock track than shoegaze. The connection here is that the Secret Machines was the main band the late Benjamin Curtis was in before School of Seven Bells.

Fresh Snow’s “Proper Burial”

Sunday, December 6th, 2015

For your Sunday dose of Shoegaze, here’s Fresh Snow‘s “Proper Burial” with a retro, Hammond B3-tinged sound and a vaguely surreal/creepy video.

The Annual William Shatner Warning Not To Set Yourself on Fire Frying a Turkey

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015

In the now-annual tradition, I bring you a public service announcement from William Shatner: try not to set yourself on fire while frying a turkey.

Behold the Shatner!

For those with low Shatner thresholds, the advice is:

  • Don’t overfill the pot with oil.
  • Turn off the flame when lowering the turkey into the oil.
  • Use the metal dingus to lower it in.
  • Always fry your turkey away from your house.
  • Properly thaw the turkey before cooking.
  • Use a grease-approved fire extinguisher.
  • If you’re going to fry a turkey, this is pretty sound advice.

    Kung Fury

    Tuesday, November 24th, 2015

Sunday I saw Kung Fury, the crowd-funded parody of every cheesy 80s cop show, science fiction movie, and fighting video game, rolled into one absurdist package.

It has everything you could ever ask for in a short film featuring a kung fu cop traveling back in time to stop Hitler, including dinosaurs, Tron-era grid computer graphics, obviously fake video compositing, and a soundtrack that sounds like it was composed by Giorgio Moroder after a 72-hour Jolt Cola binge.

Rael Bob says check it out…
