Shoegazer Sunday: Drowner Covering Slowdive’s “Hide Yer Eyes”

Sunday, December 21st, 2014

I’m really digging that Saint Marie Records Static Waves 3 album I talked about last week, though it turns out that only about one-third of the songs on it are actually Slowdive covers.

I was completely unaware of Houston band Drowner before they released this amazing cover of “Hide Yer Eyes,” an unreleased Slowdive song I’d never heard before:

I wonder if vocalist Anna Bouchard is doing the harmony electronically, via overdubbing, or with a guest vocalist.

For contrast, here’s the original

I think this is one of those rare cases where the cover is better than the original.

The Force Awakens Trailer…In LEGO

Monday, December 1st, 2014

I assume you’ve already seen the teaser trailer for next year’s Star Wars movie.

Well, here’s the LEGO remake. I’m super-impressed with how quickly they put it together, and how amazingly close to the original it is.

The Annual William Shatner Warning Not To Set Yourself on Fire Frying a Turkey

Wednesday, November 26th, 2014

In the now-annual tradition, I bring you a public service announcement from William Shatner: try not to set yourself on fire while frying a turkey.

For those with low Shatner thresholds, the advice is:

  • Don’t overfill the pot with oil.
  • Turn off the flame when lowering the turkey into the oil.
  • Always fry your turkey away from your house.
  • Properly thaw the turkey before cooking.
  • Use a grease-approved fire extinguisher.
  • If you’re going to fry a turkey, this is pretty sound advice.

Shoegazer Sunday: Last Leaf Down’s “The Theme”

    Sunday, November 16th, 2014

Here’s Last Leaf Down‘s “The Theme.” Nicely gothy and gloomy and echoey, and entirely appropriate for what’s turning out to be winter in November.

    Ultimate Anime Hero

    Monday, November 3rd, 2014

I know several people who will find this amusing…

First spotted on Fox’s Animation Domination High Def, which I’d feel more comfortable recommending if it weren’t currently 85% Axe Cop by volume….

Shoegazer Sunday: Dean & Britta’s “Nightnurse”

    Sunday, November 2nd, 2014

Not sure this is actually Shoegaze, but it’s by two former members of Luna. They sound like they were thawed out of the same 1960s time capsule as Austin Powers, sort of Nancy Sinatra dueting with Andy Williams on Quaaludes.

    Your Creepy Halloween Spider Post

    Thursday, October 30th, 2014

I’m running out of Halloween season, so it’s time for a post on that perennial source of creepiness: Spiders.

There are few things that triggers our primal fear reflex more than spiders, so here’s a Whitman’s Spider Sampler of Creepiness.

  • Here’s a family whose house was infested with deadly brown recluses.
  • If you’re afraid of spiders, you almost certainly don’t want to work at a tarantula farm.
  • An encounter with the South American Goliath birdeater spider whose feet can stretch a foot in diameter.
  • I’ve tried to avoid the common gifs everyone’s already seen, but I am intrigued by this completely unconvincing, yet oddly unnerving film snippet, and I’d like to know what (presumably silent) film it’s from:

Here’s the exceptionally creepy spider attack from The Mist:

And here’s Cyriak’s deeply disturbing “Cobwebs”:

    Let’s end on a lighter note. There’s a Simon’s Cat with a spider:

    And this:

The Silliest Horror Movie Poster I’ve Seen All Week

    Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

    Noted without comment…

    Yes, there’s a trailer.

Looks like they were aiming for a cross between 80s T&A horror films and direct to SyFy…

Halloween: Freaky Filipino Drag Queen Cover of “I Will Always Love You”

    Monday, October 27th, 2014

    It’s a good thing I already hate this song…
