Shoegazer Sunday: Slowdive’s “Golden Hair” Live

Sunday, August 17th, 2014

Since their reunion, Slowdive seems to be a vastly better touring band than they were in their heyday. I think it helps that they’ve brought on more touring musicians to fill out the sound. According to the band on Twitter, it’s just the original five members.

Here they are covering Syd Barrett’s “Golden Hair” (from that post-Pink Floyd recording session here he never played anything the same way twice). The Barrett original is some two minutes long, and the original cover Slowdive did was four minutes long. This version is eight minutes long, and ends with one of the most beautiful, multiguitar Shoegaze solos ever recorded. (No wonder that one woman in the audience looks like she’s having a religious experience…)

This was recorded at the Best Kept Secret festival in The Netherlands on Saturday, June 21, 2014.

Shoegazer Sunday: Alcian Blue/The Antiques Cover Slowdive’s “Primal”

Sunday, August 10th, 2014

The sound quality is not the best, and the vocals pretty much suck, but this cover by Alcian Blue (AKA The Antiques) is still the best live cover of “Primal” I’ve heard from anyone (including Slowdive, who only played it at early shows, and not particularly well).

Like I’ve said before, anyone doing good cover of “Primal” will get linked in this space.

As for Slowdive, their new tour shows their live shows have improved considerably, as we shall see next Sunday…

Weird Al Brings The Grammar

I bet every high school English teacher in America will be showing this to their class come September…

Shegazer Sunday: Tripwires’ “Cinnamon”

Sunday, July 6th, 2014

For your Sunday dose of Shoegaze, here’s UK psychedelic shoegaze outfit Tripwires (not to be confused with Midwestern frat rock band Tripwire) with the short, high octane “Cinnamon.”

I think the video features footage from Alejandro Jordowsky’s Holy Mountain, which includes some very brief nudity.

Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda

Sunday, June 22nd, 2014

The auteurs of The Asylum are Roger Cormen is at it again. Are you ready for Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda?

Coming August 2nd to (of course) The SyFy Channel.

At this point I’m thinking I ought to file a trademark for my Slothacconda idea…

Shoegazer Sunday: SPC ECO’s “Fallen Stars”

Sunday, June 22nd, 2014

For your Sunday dose of Shoegaze, here’s another shot of SPC ECO with “Fallen Stars.”

This is off their new album Sirens and Satellites, which I liked enough to buy. The overall sound features very pretty, very spacey background synthesizer washes with poppy tunes and understated female vocals somewhere between Florence + The Machine, Sarah McLachlan, and Tori Amos, with a dash of Yoko Kanno. The emotional feel of the album is a lot like Malory’s Outerbeats.

OK, this was moderately amusing, especially the chicken…

Shoegazer Sunday: Bertoia’s “Snow Slide”

Sunday, June 15th, 2014

How long has it been since I featured an obscure Japanese Shoegazer band? Well that’s too long!

Here’s Bertoia‘s “Snow Slide,” which proves once again that low-rent costumes and dreamquest fantasies are a fine hook to hang a music video on…

A Nice Cover of Genesis’s “Entangled”

Friday, May 30th, 2014

Stumbled across this cover of Genesis’s “Entangled” off Trick of the Tail by a band called Hydria while looking for something else, and liked it enough to put it up.

It’s a crunchier, almost power ballad version, which actually works quite well for the song.

Shoegazer Sunday: Civic’s “Innocent”

Sunday, May 25th, 2014

Here’s “Innocent,” another track of Japanese band Civic‘s debut album Toilet Monster.

Civic gets compared to Supercar, and while I can hear the resemblance, Civic has a rawer sound, like a garage band who just started meshing a few weeks ago. I like that high energy rawness, and some have labeled Civic “Noise Pop,” if that’s a real thing.

I’ve found and ordered Toilet Monster from a domestic source, and I hope to have a more detailed report if/when it comes in.
