My Interview With The Writer of Mega Shark Vs. Mecha Shark

Friday, January 3rd, 2014

Knowing of my keen interest in The Asylum’s work in the shark genre in general, and the forthcoming Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark in specific, SF Signal’s John DeNardo arranged for me to interview the writer of that film, Jose Prendes.

Now the interview has been published. Not only did Prendes write Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark, he also wrote the novel (I kid you not) Sharcano.

For some unfathomable reason, Amazon doesn’t seem to have it for pre-prder yet, but you can find more information from the publisher here. There’s also a Facebook page.

Peter O’Toole, RIP: 1932-2013

Sunday, December 15th, 2013

Acting legend Peter O’Toole has died at age 81. One of the greats, and one of my personal favorite actors, not only from Lawrence of Arabia, but as The Stunt Man, Lord Jim, The Lion in Winter, Beckett, My Favorite Year, and even his great, weird, twitchy turn in The Ruling Class.

Since everyone else in the world will have clips from Lawrence of Arabia, here’s an entire play O’Toole was in, Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, in which he plays a very talkative drunk writer (or perhaps a writing drunkard).

New Godzilla Trailer

Tuesday, December 10th, 2013

There’s a new Godzilla trailer out:

Points:

  • I’m a Godzilla fan from way back in my youth.
  • This is directed by Gareth Edwards, whose Monsters I loved.
  • It has a script by Frank Darabont, AKA “The Only Guy Who Can Make Great Films From Stephen King’s Novels.”
  • Holy shit does Zilla look big.
  • If you need something to fill the time between now and May 2014, may I suggest Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack? Despite the cheesy title, this is actually the best Godzilla film since the original Gojira
  • Mood: Cautious Optimism.

    Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark

    Friday, December 6th, 2013

Thanks to the keen eye of SF Signal’s John DeNardo, we have word that the auteurs at The Asylum or offering their homage to Terror of MechaGodzilla: Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark.

It looks like pretty much everything we’ve come to expect from The Asylum…

The Complete Monty Python Reunion Press Conference

    Thursday, November 21st, 2013

In case you hadn’t heard, Monty Python’s Flying Circus is reuniting for a live show at London’s 02 Arena next July 1st.

Because I like Monty Python, and because I’m not above blatant click-bait, here’s a video of the entire press conference announcing the reunion.

    Random Notes:

    1. The sound seems screwed up after about 5 minutes, but you can still hear them.
    2. Love the wrong names.
    3. Love Gilliam’s Mr. Bill shirt.
    4. Carol Cleveland looks really, really good for her age.

New York’s Last Movie Photo Shop Closes Its Doors

    Tuesday, October 29th, 2013

I’m sort of surprised one was still in business. What with the insane rents and all.

Also, Rick Klaw’s grandfather, Bettie Page photographer Irving Klaw, gets namechecked.

Maybe You Shouldn’t Read This Post If You’re Depressed

    Monday, October 7th, 2013

Ever now and then you come across something interesting, but you wonder “What the hell do I say about this?”

I was looking for some scary gifs when I came across this. There are a few in the, but it seems to be mostly depressing black and white gifs for suicidal teenage girls.

    Like this:

    Or this:

Interestingly enough, more than half seem to be of stunningly beautiful actresses from popular culture. And, naturally, there’s a lot of Nine Inch Nails references.

    And this is pretty striking:

Anyway, if you find yourself making or posting these gifs, maybe you should read this.

Consider this more an act of reportage than commentary…

    Interesting Interview With Gene Wilder

    Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013

It’s the day after Worldcon, and I’m more than a little toasty, so expect slow blogging while I get up to speed.

So here’s a long interview with Gene Wilder about his career, working with Richard Pryor, Mel Brooks, Gilda Radner, etc. Wilder has reached the stage in his life where he speaks slowly and carefully, but always cognizantly, and it’s an interesting interview. I suspect that if it were not the day after Worldcon, I’d find it a little slow, but right now slow is just fine.

    Oversized Arachnid Cinema

    Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

Looks like I’ve been falling down on my Giant Spider reporting duties. A retro black-and-white giant spider film has been released called, oddly enough, The Giant Spider.

There’s an IMDB listing for it as well.

    Hollywood Auction Alert

    Saturday, July 27th, 2013

Hollywood auction house is having another big auction of film memorabilia, including a few interesting SF-related items:

  • The fourth issue of the fanzine Imagination, which includes Ray Bradbury’s first published story.
  • Willis O’Brien’s very shoggothian concept art for an unproduced film called The Bubbles, featuring “bubble-like creatures in Baja, California that devour everything in their path.”

  • Electrodes from both the James Whale Frankenstein and Young Frankenstein.
  • A diving helmet from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
  • Concept art from Forbidden Planet.
  • Charlton Heston’s torn Planet of the Ape pants, plus ape masks.
  • Props from Alien and Aliens
  • A bunch of Star Wars posters and props.
  • Lots of The Nightmare Before Christmas props and sets.
  • Some Matrix stuff, both from the good one and the crappy ones.
  • That farking annoying robot from The Black Hole.
  • Frank’s bunny mask from Donnie Darko.
  • Enough stuff from The Wizard of Oz. and The Sound of Music to start your own museum.
  • Plus Bruce Lee’s nun-chucks, Conan’s sword, the Terminator’s gun, Jason’s machete, Maximus’ axe, Legalos’ arrow, Indiana Jones’ whip, Jack Sparrow’s sword, Captain Kirk’s phaser, a Ghostbusters proton pack, The Comedian’s pistols, Freddy Kreuger’s fingernails, Rambo’s knife, James Bond’s gun, and Scarface’s “little friend.”

The auction is online in a “Flipbook” format, evidently invented because HTML was insufficiently annoying.
