New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer Drops
Thursday, April 16th, 2015The Force Awakens Trailer…In LEGO
Monday, December 1st, 2014I assume you’ve already seen the teaser trailer for next year’s Star Wars movie.
Well, here’s the LEGO remake. I’m super-impressed with how quickly they put it together, and how amazingly close to the original it is.
2015 To Be Filled With Blockbuster Franchise Sequels
Monday, May 5th, 2014There’s lots of news about staggeringly successful, critically acclaimed movie franchise having new installments out in 2015.
What, you’re saying the words “staggeringly successful,” “critically acclaimed” and “franchise” don’t apply to Sharknado?
All I have to say about that is: I had a great deal more fun watching Sharknado than I did Attack of the Clones.
In other Sharknado-related news, The Asylum is crowd-funding a scene in Sharknado 2: The Second One. Personally, I think $50,000 for a single scene is more than a bit high. Give The Asylum’s previous track record, with that much money I would expect them to make an entire film…
Dinsey Buys LucasFilms for $4.05 Billion, Plans Star Wars VII in 2015
Tuesday, October 30th, 2012“Disney is paying $4.05 billion to buy Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind Star Wars, from its chairman and founder, George Lucas. It’s also making a seventh movie in the Star Wars series.”
Well, at least it will keep Lucas from tinkering with the original one for the rest of his life. Or, worse still, going back and “rebooting” it.
How good will a seventh film be? Depends on whether Brad Bird or Michael Bay directs, doesn’t it?
I do hope this means they’ll finally put out pristine Blu-rays of the unfarked with first three films….
The Empire’s Suboptimal Weapons Acquisition Programs
Sunday, October 9th, 2011Evidently bureaucracy is the same wherever you go, even a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away:
To be sure, the Death Star is primarily a weapon of intimidation rather than something to be used all willy-nilly. Even the Evil Empire didn’t want to demolish more than a handful of planets. So the fact that the Death Star only ever fired one shot may not be that big of a deal. However, the fact that the stations kept getting blown up is a big deal indeed. It’s hard to be intimidating if you’re a smoking cloud of debris.
One might wonder how such an ostensibly powerful weapon could have such a consistently poor track record and such a gaping weakness. Despite the opinion of certain critics, these shortcomings are not a cheap plot device by a lazy writer. In fact, the Death Star’s combination o inadequacy and vulnerability may be the second-most realistic aspect of the entire saga.
From a design perspective, a system as enormously complex as a Death Star is more than any program manager or senior architect can handle, no matter how high their midi-chlorian count is. There is bound to be an overlooked exhaust vent or two that leads directly to the reactor core. That is just the sort of vulnerability an asymmetric opponent can exploit….
The truth is, Death Stars are about as practical as a metal bikini. Sure, they look cool, but they aren’t very sensible. Specifically, Death Stars can’t possibly be built on time or on bud-get, require pathological leadership styles and, as we’ve noted, keep getting blown up. Also, nobody can build enough of them to make a real difference in the field.

Attention German TV: Star Trek Forces Were Not Involved in the Killing of Osama Bin Laden
Tuesday, May 10th, 2011“Yesterday a German news station had a major image fail. While covering the US Navy SEALs operation to kill Osama bin Laden they mistook a Star Trek fan-made emblem for the Maquis for the actual SEAL Team Six emblem.”
Evidently the Klingon skull and bat’leth blades simply weren’t a sufficient giveaway…
