    Halloween Horrors: Gateways to Hell

In lieu of some real Halloween links, here’s a quickie: Places on earth that are supposedly gateways to Hell.

And here’s another video on the same subject:

Another Year, Another Halloween Prop Show

    Thursday, October 26th, 2017

A new job and a new dog have been eating up a lot of my time, so I’ve fallen down on my regular Halloween posts.

But here’s a nice video of the latest Halloween scare props. All these seem to be from the same company. Sadly, I doubt I can afford any of them…

Lame Excuse Books Catalog for September 2016

    Monday, October 2nd, 2017

Welcome to another edition of “Lawrence posts the Latest Lame Excuse Books catalog as a text file.”

Greetings, and welcome to the Lame Excuse Books catalog for September 2017!

In addition to the usual small press firsts from Subterranean Press, Tachyon, Charnel House, etc., it’s got signed books by Douglas Adams, Ray Bradbury, Michael Moorcock and Neil Gaiman, an already-out-of-print Joe Hill limited, a stunningly beautiful Jack Vance limited, and the usual assortment of odds and end, a few volumes that somehow escaped cataloging heretofore, along with a lot of price markdowns.

With the demise of TomFolio, I switched over to Biblio as my multi-listing site. While uploading there, I marked some things up there to take into account their commission structure. However, I also
found some things over market, so anything I marked down there I’m listing here under the new price. Finally, I have some Ex-Library books and other books that were under $10 which have sat around for
entirely too long. I’m blowing those out for $1, so look for BLOWOUT PRICE for those if you want to stock up on cheap reading copies.

I’ve also noticed that a lot of Subterranean Press books have gone out of print since the last time I checked. A lot are listed below at or below cover price, so you might want to pick those up while you can.

The URL for the main Lame Excuse Books webpage is:

    https://www.lawrenceperson.com/lame.html

I’m still doing a Lame Excuse Books Twitter feed:

    https://twitter.com/LameExcuseBooks

My books are also now listed at:

    https://www.biblio.com/bookstore/lame-excuse-books-austin

But buying directly from me guarantees you the best price.

    Payment, Contact & Shipping Information

Email me at lawrenceperson@gmail.com. I can hold books ten days on

book, and $1.00 a book thereafter. Foreign shipping is at cost (please
inquire; for most locations, First Class International starts at
$22.50 now). Books may be returned in the same condition sent for any
reason within 10 days of purchase for a full refund. Please make

    Now the books!

    Hardbacks

LP2551. Adams, Douglas. Mostly Harmless. Harmony Books, 1992. First
U.S. hardback edition, a Fine- copy with very slight crimping at head
and heel, a dime-sized spot of very slight/faint discoloration to
front free endpaper, in a Near Fine+ dust jacket with slight surface
wear. Signed by Adams. Fifth and last book in the Hitchhiker series.
    $49.

LP2298. Anthony, Piers. Question Quest. Tor, 1991. First edition
hardback, a Fine copy in a Near Fine dust jacket with a crease to
corner of front flap. The Fourteenth Xanth novel. Not the sort of
thing I usually carry, but it came over in an auction lot. BLOWOUT
    PRICE. $1.

LP2383B. Armstrong, Kelley. Forsaken. Subterranean Press 2015 First
edition hardback, 1 of 1000 signed, numbered copies with a different
cover and internal color illustration pages, a Fine copy in a Fine
dust jacket, new and unread. Otherworld novel featuring werewolves.
Cover price: $48. For you? $35.

LP2384. Asimov, Isaac. Nine Tomorrows . Doubleday, 1959. Early reprint
($4.50 on dust jacket, no First Edition statement on copyright page),
an Ex-Library copy with the usual flaws, otherwise Good+ with hinges
starting to crack, heavy wear at heel, tape ghosts to endpapers,
dampstaining to last few pages, in a Very Good- dust jacket with
sticker on spine, tape on flaps, and general wear along spine. Reading
copy of this early Asimov collection, which includes “The Last
Question” (a personal favorite) and “The Ugly Little Boy.” Plus a few
pages of rejection slips in the form of poems! BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2064. Banks, Iain M. Against a Dark Background. Orbit, 1993. First
edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with slight haze
rubbing (which means the glossy black areas seem to have a bit of haze
on them if you move them back and forth under a strong light),
otherwise new and unread. Banks first “pure” non-Culture SF novel.
Banks was a phenomenally talented writer who died way too young. $100.

LP2066. Banks, Iain M. Excession. Orbit, 1996. First edition hardback,
a Fine copy (though with the characteristic slight page darkening of
Orbit books of this era) in a Fine dust jacket. Inscribed by Banks:
    “To Narayan/-best wishes/Iain M. Banks”. Recommended. A Culture novel.
For some reason I can’t find a single signed Excession on Bookfinder.
    $175.

LP2173. Banks, Iain. The Quarry. Little Brown (UK), 2013. Fourth
printing of the hardback first edition, a Fine copy in a Fine dust
jacket, new and unread. Banks’ last novel, alas. $5.

LP2116. Banks, Iain. Stonemouth. Little Brown (UK), 2012. Second
printing of the hardback first edition, a Fine copy in a Fine dust
jacket, new and unread. His second to last novel. Man comes back home
for a funeral; complications ensue. Missed the reprint statement when
I picked it up, so I’m selling it cheap. $5.

LP2552. Barnes, John. Sin of Origin. Congdon & Weed, 1988. First
edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with a slight bit
of crimping at head and slight haze rubbing along the spine join. His
second novel, set on a distant planet featuring multiple alien
species. Part of the Isaac Asimov Presents line. $10.

LP2554. Bear, Elizabeth. ad eternum. Subterranean Press, 2012. First
edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new and unread.
Part of her New Amsterdam series. Trade edition. $14.

LP1518. Brackett, Leigh. The Long Tomorrow. Doubleday, 1955. Hardback,
no edition stated, very possibly a book club, a VG+ copy with slight
spots of staining (looks like dusty handprints) to boards, lacks the
dj. Reading copy. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2556. Bradbury, Ray. Green Shadows, White Whale. Knopf, 1992. First
edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with a slight bit
of wrinkling at head and heel. Inscribed by Bradbury: “Michael!/Ray
Bradbury/Nov. 22, 94.” Fictionalized novel of Bradbury writing the
screenplay for Walter Huston’s film of Moby Dick. $30.

LP2180. Bradbury, Ray. With Cat for Comforter. Gibbs-Smith Publisher,
1997. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Poem
done as an illustrated children’s book in a small trim size. I get the
impression this was for the pet store trade, so you might not have
    stumbled across it. $5.

LP32. Bradfield, Scott. The Secret Life of Houses (U.S. title: The
Dream of the Wolf). Unwin Hyman (UK), 1988. First edition hardback
Fine/Fine-, with very slight head and heel bumping, and very faint
rubbing to the back of the white dj. The author’s first book, a
slipstream short story collection from which Ellen Datlow plucked the
delightfully twisted “The Darling” for one of her Year’s Bests. Later
reprinted in the US as The Dream of the Wolf. $5.

LP1153. Bradley, Marion Zimmer. The House Between Worlds. Doubleday,
1980. First edition hardback, an Ex-Library copy (see Ex-Library Note)
with all the usual flaws, otherwise VG- with spine lean, slight spine
creasing, wear to bottom boards, and soiling to all three page blocks,
in a NF- dj with creasing at extremities. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2518. Buckley, William F., Jr. Brothers No More. Doubleday, 1995.
First edition hardback, a Very Good copy with slight dampstaining to
last few pages at heel lifting some of the binding dye to the page
edges, in a near Fine dust jacket with slight surface wear and slight
crease to inner top flap. Thriller that starts in World War II.
Earlier this year, I won a Buckley lot at auction quite cheaply, about
half of which were signed. The non-signed books in the lot I’m blowing
out cheap as reading copies. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2520. Buckley, William F., Jr. High Jinx. Doubleday, 1986. First
edition hardback, a Fine- copy with a few pinpricks of dust staining
at head in a Very Good+ dust jacket, with shallow chipping at head,
heel and along the top edge of the front. A Blackford Oakes spy
    thriller. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2522. Buckley, William F., Jr. Spytime: The Undoing of James Jesus
Angleton. Harcourt, 2000. First edition hardback, a Very Good with spy
concave, in a Near Fine dust jacket. Novel based on Angleton’s
real-life hunt for a communist mole in the CIA. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2523. Buckley, William F., Jr. A Very Private Plot. Morrow, 1994.
First edition hardback, a Very Good- copy with dampstaining at heel
and associated black dye transfer from boards, in a Very Good- dust
jacket with dampstain warping to front and rear. A Blackford Oakes spy
    thriller. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP39. Butler, Octavia. Clay’s Ark. St. Martins, 1984. First edition
hardback, an ex-library copy, with all the usual flaws, otherwise
    Fine-/Fine-. $10.

LP475. Card, Orson Scott. A Planet Called Treason. St. Martin’s, 1979.
First edition hardback, an ex-library copy with all the usual flaws,
otherwise G-/VG-, with a cracked inner hinge resulting in uneven page
blocks, spine lean, a large stain on page 91/92, wear to bottom
boards, and some 3/8″ chipping at dj head. A reading copy or
    placeholder only. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP48. Carter, Raphael. The Fortunate Fall. Tor, 1996. First edition
hardback, Fine/Fine-, unread, with trace of wear to matte black cover.
One of the best first novels of the 1990s. Recommended. $10.

LP655. Cherryh, C. J. Cyteen. Warner Books, 1988. First edition
hardback, an Ex-Library copy, with all the usual flaws, otherwise
G+/NF+ with spine lean, significant wear to bottom boards, long black
marker line on heel, spine leaned and slightly concave. Well-worn, but
an attractive dj for an Ex-Lib, and a true first of a Hugo winner.
    BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP1156. Cherryh, C. J. Forty Thousand in Gehenna. Phantasia Press,
1983. First edition hardback, an Ex-Library copy (see Ex-Library Note)
with all the usual flaws, otherwise VG with slight spine lean, wear to
bottom boards, and soiling to all three page blocks, in a NF dj with
slight creasing at extremities. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP1386. Clarke, Arthur C. Earthlight. Ballantine Books, 1955. First
edition hardback (no statement of printing on copyright page, as per
Currey), an Ex-Library Copy, with two lines of black marker on half
title page, small stamp and writing on copyright page, “Salvage” stamp
on FFE, pocket and stamps on RFE, and tape ghosts to boards, otherwise
VG- with moderate dust soiling to top page block and wear to bottom
boards in a VG+ dust jacket with 1″ x 2″ yellowed repair tape to head
to repair what appears to be two 1/2 x 1/8″ sections of dj loss along
front and rear join folds; save for that, this is a very attractive
dust jacket in a Mylar protector that shows no signs of being from an
Ex-Lib copy, and save the tape, the rear white panel appears to be
free of the usual soiling. All and all, better than a shelf-filing
copy of one of Clarke’s better novels, depicting a military conflict
centered around a moon colony and near-Earth orbit. The Ballantine
Books hardbacks of this era had very small runs compared to the
simultaneous paperback editions; while this is not quite as hard to
find as Childhood’s End, it’s hard enough. $200.

LP2373. Crichton, Michael, as Jeffery Hudson. A Case of Need.
NAL/World Publishing, 1968. Book club hardback, a Near Fine copy in a
Very Good- dust jacket with inexpertly taped 3″ tear across front and
spine, with some associated pull loss, two 3/16″ tears at top front,
and some age darkening to white dust jacket, which is otherwise
intact. Solid reading copy of this pseudonymous Crichton mystery about
a woman who died after an abortion. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP1118. Dean, Pamela. Tam Lin. Tor, 1991. First edition hardback, a
Fine- copy with exceptionally slight bumping at head and heel in a
Fine, pristine dj. The second book in the Fairy Tale series. Tom Canty
cover. A truly beautiful copy of this increasingly scarce fantasy
    novel. $70.

LP2184. Denton, Brad. Sergeant Chip and Other Novellas. Subterranean
Press, 2014. First edition hardback, one of 750 signed, numbered
copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new and unread. Three
novellas, all of which I’m pretty sure are swell. Now out of print
    from the publisher. $30.

    LP1394. Dick, Philip K. I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon. Doubleday, 1985.
First edition hardback, an Ex-Library copy with all the usual flaws,
otherwise VG/NF with spine lean and wear to the bottom boards.
    Posthumous short story collection. $4.

LP873. Di Filippo, Paul. Spondulix. Cambrian Publications, 2003. First
edition hardback, one of only 300 signed/limited hardback copies, Fine
in a Fine dj, new and unread. $34.

LP2073. Di Filippo, Paul. Strange Trades. Golden Gryphon, 2001. First
edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new and unread.
Short story collection about various jobs. Introduction by Bruce
Sterling. Recommended, especially for “The Mill.” $12.

LP2558. Dozois, Gardner, editor (Dan Simmons, Poul Anderson, Pat
Cadigan, Greg Egan, Joe Haldeman, Michael Swanwick, Ursula K. Le Guin,
etc.) The Year’s Best Science Fiction: Thirteenth Annual Collection.
St. Martin’s Press, 1996. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with a
tiny bit of crimping at head and heel in a Near Fine- dust jacket with
a faint non-breaking crease on the lower half of the spine, light haze
rubbing to spine and rear, and a few touches of wear, mainly at
points. Not pristine, but a reasonably nice copy of a hardback Dozois
Year’s First that’s getting hard to find (no hardback firsts listed
online as of this writing). Includes Egan’s mindblowing “Wang’s
    Carpets.” $49.

LP2187. Dozois, Gardner, editor (Greg Egan, Charles Stross, Michael
Swanwick, Lucius Shepard, Ursula K. Le Guin, etc.) The Year’s Best
Science Fiction: Eighteenth Annual Collection. St. Martin’s Press,
2001. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with
a tiny bit of edgewear at head. Includes Stross’ “A Colder War,”
featuring the the U.S. and USSR engaging in a buildup of Elder Race
technology and worrying about a “Shuggoth Gap”… $25.

LP1261. Drake, David (Gene Wolfe). The Complete Hammers Slammers.
Night Shade Books, 2006. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine
dj, new and unread. First of three volumes of linked stories of future
tank warfare. Gene Wolfe provides the introduction. $14.

edition hardback F/NF, with scratches and abrasions to back dj.
    BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP1114. Effinger, George Alec (Neil Gaiman, Howard Waldrop, Neal
Barrett, Jr., Gardner Dozois, Bradley Denton, Michael Bishop, Mike
Resnick, Barbara Hambly, Lawrence Person, Jack Dann, Pamela Sargent,
George Zebrowski, Lawrence Person, Richard Gilliam). Live! From Planet
Earth. Golden Gryphon, 2005. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a
Fine dj, new and unread. Posthumous collection of some of George’s
best non-series stories, including “The Aliens Who Knew, I Mean,
Everything,” “Two Sadnesses,” “All the Last Wars at Once,” and “Seven
Nights in Slumberland.” Includes introductions by Neil Gaiman, Howard
Waldrop, Neal Barrett, Jr., Gardner Dozois, Bradley Denton, Michael
Bishop, Mike Resnick, Barbara Hambly, Lawrence Person, Jack Dann,
Pamela Sargent, George Zebrowski, Lawrence Person, and Richard
Gilliam. Signed by cover artist John Picacio and Lawrence Person (I
did the introduction to “My Old Man”; inscribed by me at your
    request). You need one. $14.

LP69. Effinger, George Alec. The Nick of Time. Doubleday, 1986. First
edition hardback, ex-library copy, with most of the usual flaws,
    otherwise NF+/NF+. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP1950. Effinger, George Alec. A Thousand Deaths. Golden Gryphon
Press, 2007. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust
jacket, new and unread. All George’s Sandour Courane stories,
including the very funny (and very dark) novel The Wolves of Memory,
which George considered the best of his pre-When Gravity Fails novels.
Signed cover artist John Picacio. $18.

LP2559. Ellison, Harlan. Edgeworks 2: Spider Kiss/Stalking the
Nightmare. White Wolf/Borealis Legends, 1996. First edition hardback
thus, a Fine copy in a Fine Mylar-protected dust jacket. An omnibus
edition of Spider Kiss and Stalking the Nightmare. $10.

LP1686. Egan, Greg. Crystal Nights and Other Stories. Subterranean
Press, 2009. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust
jacket, new and unread. Short story collection. Now sold out from the
    publisher. $30.

LP1782. Egan, Greg. Dark Integers. Subterranean Press, 2008. First
edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new and unread.
Short story collection that’s long out of print. Recommended. Only
    have one. $48.

LP842. Erdrich, Louise. The Antelope Wife. Harper Flamingo/Harper
Collins, 1998. First edition hardback, a Fine- copy in a Fine- dj with
a single trace of wear at heel, exceptionally slight bumping at head
and heel, and a trace of wear at top dj corners, including 1/16″
closed tear and a very small associated wrinkle, otherwise new and

World Fantasy Award winning novel. $4.

LP400. Estleman, Loren D. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Holmes. Doubleday, 1979.
First edition hardback, an ex-library copy with all the usual flaws,

    BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP486. Finney, Jack. Marion’s Wall. Simon & Schuster, 1973. First
edition hardback, an ex-library copy with all the usual flaws,
otherwise VG+/F- with some spine lean and a thin, dime-width stain
affecting the bottom of the first twenty pages or so. Filmed as Maxie.
    BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2560. Gaiman, Neil. Anansi Boys. William Morrow, 2005. First edition
hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with a tiny bit of
wrinkling at head. Inscribed by Gaiman on the dedication page (as is
typical for signed or inscribed copies of this novel): “Cliff, Jeff,
and the Amazing Maurice/[circled text on dedication page]This one’s
for you/Neil Gaiman.” Novel tangentially related to American Gods,
though I think this one is better. Recommended. $30.

LP403. Gentle, Mary. A Hawk in Silver. Gollancz, 1987. Hardback
reprint of her first novel, Fine/Fine-, with a pricing barcode over
the UPC and under the dj protector (it may be easy to remove). Like an
idiot I ordered this thinking that the 1987 was a misprint and it was
the 1977 Gollancz first edition. Still a nice hardback reading copy.
    $5.

LP1058. Glass, Julia. Three Junes. Pantheon, 2002. First edition
hardback (numberline goes down to I, “First Edition” statement
present) in a first state dj (no mention of Good Morning America), a
Fine-/Fine- copy with just the barest trace of bumping at head and
heel, and a phantom wrinkle to top front cover just above title.
    National Book Award winner. $5.

LP85. Godwin, Parke. The Fire When It Comes. Doubleday, 1984. First
hardback edition, an Ex-Library copy with all the usual flaws,
otherwise F/NF. Contains the World Fantasy Award winning title
novella, as well as several other memorable tales. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP90. Graves, Richard. Cobalt 60. Stein and Day, 1975. First hardback
edition, NF+/NF-, with 1/4″ chip front dj near head and 1/2″ closed
tear on dj top back. Looks like a weird-ass technothriller involving
Arab assassination plots and high finance. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP91. Greenland, Colin. Take Back Plenty. AvoNova, 1990 (listed on
copyright page-the Locus database gives it a publication year of
1992). Book club (first and only hardback) edition, Fine/Fine- with
slight bumping at head. Arthur C. Clarke Award and British Science
    Fiction Award winner. $5.

LP2376. Grissom, Ken. Big Fish. St. Martin’s Press, 1991. First
edition hardback, an Ex-Library copy with all the usual flaws,

    PRICE. $1.

LP2525. Haining, Peter. The Dracula Centenary Book. Souvenir Press,
1987. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with

LP92. Hamilton, Peter F. Mindstar Rising. Tor, 1996. First hardback
(and first U.S.) edition, preceded by the UK PBO, Fine-/Fine-, with
the barest trace of wear to the rear dj, and very slight bumping (not
affecting dj) to heel. The first Greg Mandel book. $10.

winning novel about a woman in Houston who receives her mother’s
ability to be ridden by loa as an unexpected bequest. $15.

LP1359. Stross, Charles. The Jennifer Morgue. Golden Gryphon, 2006.
First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dj, new and unread.
Sequel to the Lovecraftian spy thriller The Atrocity Archive, which is
my favorite of Charlie’s books so far, staring geek-coder-turned-spy
Bob Howard. Contains the extra story “Pimpf.” It’s every bit as tasty
as the first novel. Already in a second printing, so snap up a first
while you have the chance. $18.

LP1916. Swanwick, Michael. Dancing With Bears. Night Shade Books,
2011. First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new
and unread. His latest novel, featuring con-men Darger and Surplus.
    $15.

LP2381. Tolkin, Michael. The Player. Atlantic Monthly Books, 1988.
First edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Hollywood
satire that was the basis of the Robert Altman film. $5.

LP694. Tyler, Anne. The Tin Can Tree. Knopf, 1965. First edition
hardback, and Ex-Library copy, with all the usual flaws, otherwise
Good/Good+, with heavy wear to bottom boards, FFE ripped away, spine
roiled, front inner hinge moderately cracked, shallow chipping and
light but noticeable 1″ staining to head. A well worn copy, but this
is a true first edition of the second novel from this very popular
    writer. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP918. Vachss, Andrew H. Flood. Donald I. Fine, 1985. First edition
hardback, a NF-/VG copy with an ink name crossed on the inside front
cover, mostly but not completely hidden by the flap) and slight head
and heel bumping, with a 1/2″ closed tear on the top front dj cover
along with an associated 2″ triangular crease, patches of light
discoloration (possibly very light grease stains) at the very top and
very bottom of dj rear near the spine, and a couple of 3/8″ closed
tears on front dj bottom. A bit better than it sounds and fairly nice
spine-out. The first Vachss (and Burke) novel. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP749. Vance, Jack. Eight Fantasms and Magics. Macmillan, 1969. First
edition hardback, an Ex-Library copy, with tape ghosts to front and
rear boards and FFE, RFE missing, and crossed-out stamp at head,
otherwise VG/NF with cracked rear hinge, some spine lean, what looks
like water-mottling to publisher’s top edge stain, some spine lean,
and a faint 1/4″ line across dj rear and back flap (uniform enough
that it could be a publishers flaw from the purple dj) and slight
fading to spine. Still more attractive than the average Ex-Lib copy,
and the dj is nice enough to use as a replacement on a jacketless
    copy. $15.

LP2571. Vance, Jack. Night Lamp. Underwood Books, 1996. First edition
hardback (and precedes the Tor edition by over six months), #533 of
600 signed, numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket and
Fine- traycase (the outer joins for the right side of the traycase
aren’t cracked, but it looks like a binding flaw of about 1/8″ and a
hairline wide where the binding cloth didn’t run all the way to the
edge of the join; very minor, and you probably wouldn’t notice it if I
hadn’t called it out). To mind the most beautiful of all the Jack
Vance limited editions, and novel is pretty good too! Recommended.
    $200.

LP2145. Vinge, Vernor. The Children of the Sky. Tor, 2011. First
edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, apparently new
and unread. The sequel to A Fire Upon the Deep. $20.

LP2042. Walton, Jo. Among Others. Tor, 2011. First edition hardback, a
Fine copy in a Fine-, Mylar-protected dust jacket one tiny,
non-breaking crease on the bottom inner front jacket fold corner,
otherwise new and unread. Welsh fairy magic and science fiction
fandom. Hugo and Nebula Award winner. Already hard to find, especially
without a remainder mark (save that tiny crease, this copy is
    pristine). $145.

LP1429. Wells, Martha. City of Bones. Tor, 1995. First edition
hardback, an Ex-Library copy with all the usual flaws, otherwise
VG/NF+ with slight spine lean and a touch of wear. Her second novel.
    Signed by Wells. $2.

LP1192. Wells, Martha. The Element of Fire. Tor, 1992. First edition
hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dj with just a trace of edgewear at
extremities, otherwise immaculate. Difficult to find in any edition,
nearly impossible for the hardback, and doubly so for a signed copy.
    $50.

LP205. Whitbourn, John. To Build Jerusalem. Gollancz (UK), 1995. First
edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Alternate history
dark fantasy, set in the same world as A Dangerous Energy, which was
very good indeed. No U.S. editions of any of his novels that I’ve
    seen. $9.

LP206. Wilhelm, Kate. Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang. Harper & Row,
1976. First edition hardback, an ex-library copy, with all the usual
flaws, otherwise Good+/Very Good, with significant spine lean and wear
to bottom boards. Hugo winner, Nebula finalist. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP209. Wilson, F. Paul. Healer. Doubleday, 1976. First edition
hardback, ex-library copy, with all the usual flaws, otherwise Very
Good/Near Fine, with wear to bottom boards and head and heel bumping.
His first novel. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP211. Wilson, F. Paul. Wheels Within Wheels. Doubleday, 1978. First
edition hardback, ex-library copy, with all the usual flaws, otherwise
Very Good/Near Fine, with spine lean, wear to bottom boards and spine
fading. His second novel. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2043. Wolfe, Gene. Home Fires. PS Publishing, 2011. First limited
(and first UK) edition, one of 300 signed copies, a Fine copy in a
Fine dust jacket, new and unread. Science fiction love story of a rich
middle-aged man whose wife, still young, has just returned from a
interstellar war, and his attempts to woe her back by paying for the
resurrection of her mother and booking them on a cruise ship.
Complications (like pirates, spies, and voodoo gods) ensue.
Recommended. I think this edition may be out of print from the
    publisher. $39.

LP2505. Wolfe, Gene. Pirate Freedom. Tor, 2007. First edition
hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine- dust jacket with slight curl at head
and light, not breaking surface wear to rear cover. Gene Wolfe does a
pirate novel in his usual tricky, brilliant way. Recommended. $15.

LP1070. Yarbro, Chelsea Quinn. Blood Games. St. Martins, 1878. First
edition hardback, an Ex-Library copy with all the usual flaws,
otherwise Near Fine/Fine- with thin line at heel, one tiny spot of
wear to boards at heel, slight soiling to page block edges, and slight
crinkling to dj head. Third book in the Count de Saint-Germain vampire
chronicles, set in Nero’s Rome. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

LP2405. Zafon, Carlos Ruiz. The Prisoner of Heaven. Subterranean
Press, 2014. First limited edition hardback, #339 of 500 signed,
numbered copies, a Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket, new and unread.
This edition is sold out from the publisher, and I’m not seeing any
copies of it listed online. $124.

LP1751. Zelazny, Roger. Bridge of Ashes. Gregg Press, 1979. First
hardback edition, an Ex-library copy, with all the usual flaws, would
otherwise be a Near Fine/Near Fine copy. Levack 2e. $15.

LP2571. Zelazny, Roger (Scott Zrubeck, editor). Manna from Heaven. DNA
Publications/Wildside Press, 2003. First edition hardback (this was a
POD book, but 2003 was the first year they produced this title), a
Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket (as well as decorated boards).
Collection of previously uncollected Roger Zelazny short pieces. $30.

LP1753. Zelazny, Roger. Nine Princes in Amber. Doubleday, 1970. First
edition hardback (Currey, p. 571, Levack 28a) with First Printing
stated and date code L16 on page 188, an Ex-Library copy with most of
the usual flaws, including small pocket remains and large library card
affixed to FFE, blind side dj glue spot transfers to inner front cover
(white on white), front hinge just starting to crack, rear hinge fully
cracked, sticker on dj spine bottom (might be removable with time and
patience), front flap free (with previously noted blind side
transfer), rear flap still affixed to rear cover, one small, 1/4″ x
1/16″ light brown stain to very tip of bottom rear flap, and very
    light general (non-breaking) creasing; call it a VG-/NF- Ex-Library
copy. Believe it or not, this is a better copy than Ex-Library copies
are generally found, and the dust jacket is actually in unusually good
shape, both front cover and spine an unfaded blue. The first book in
the Amber series. The story is that Doubleday’s warehouse was
mistakenly ordered to pulp all Zelazny’s books the same day this one
arrived from the printer, which means that only pre-orders and library
sales escaped the pulping, and why the vast majority of the very few
copies that come up for sale are Ex-Library copies. Highly
recommended. 50% off the previous price. $375.

LP1754. Zelazny, Roger. The Sign of the Unicorn. Doubleday, 1975.
First edition hardback (Currey, p. 571, Levack 33a), a Near Fine copy
with a bookplate and previous owner’s signature on the FFE in a Near
Fine- dust jacket, with a 1/2″ semi-closed tear on rear bottom spine
join, a 1/2″ closed tear on front bottom spine join, tiny flecks of
white rubbing along rear spine join, a 1/4″ closed tear on bottom
rear, and some slight dust staining to white rear dust jacket, but
otherwise a very presentable copy. The third Amber novel, and getting
harder to find. Highly recommended, as are all five of the original
    Amber novels. 50% OFF. $35.

LP1364. Zelazny, Roger. The Sign of the Unicorn. Doubleday, 1975.
First edition hardback, an Ex-Library copy with all the usual flaws
(see Ex-Library note), otherwise VG- with notable wear to boards at
heel, in a VG+ attached dj with tiny chips at head and slight
wrinkling (probably from the way the dj protector was applied). The
third original Amber novel, all five of which are Highly Recommended.
    $10.

LP454. Zindell, David. Neverness. Donald I. Fine, 1988. First edition
hardback, an ex-library copy (not ex-APL) with most of the usual
flaws, including protected dj taped to boards, stickers to dj spine,
heel bumped, stamp to head, pocket and stamp in rear, some wear to
bottom boards, slight gap at top between page block and cloth back,
otherwise Near Fine/Near Fine. Despite this list of flaws, this is
actually fairly attractive for an Ex-Lib copy. His first novel, quite
hard to find these days. BLOWOUT PRICE. $1.

signed by 13 of the contributors. Anthology of SF stories from Texas
writers published for the 2013 Worldcon in San Antonio. I have a story

a Greg Egan story by way of H. P. Lovecraft and Timothy Leary.
Introduction by Bruce Sterling. This copy signed by myself, editor
Rick Klaw, cover artist Rocky Kelly, and contributors Joe R. Lansdale,
Don Webb, Chris Brown, Matthew Bay, Stina Leicht, Nicky Drayden,

2017. First edition trade paperback original, a Fine copy, new and
unread. The latest Hippocampus collection of Lovecraft letters, and it
should be quite interesting, as I think Lovecraft heavily influenced
Moore’s early work. Note: Due to a shipping mixup, my copies of this
are still in transit, but should be here soon. $24.

LP2576. (Lovecraft, H.P.) Paula Guran, editor (Michael Shea, John
Shirley, Don Webb, etc.). The Mammoth Book of Cthulhu. Robinson, 2016.
First edition trade paperback original, a Fine copy.Just under 500

corner. Signed by Waldrop. UK omnibus edition that includes all the
stories in Howard Who? and All About Strange Monsters of the Recent
Past. Highly recommended if you don’t already have those two
collections. This omnibus edition has gotten somewhat hard to find
    recently. $25.

    Mass Market Paperbacks

LP2579. Burroughs, Edgar Rice. The Moon Men. Ace, no date (but given
the $1.50 cover price, probably around 1974-75). Paperback reprint, a
Near Fine- copy with slight age darkening to white rear cover, 2″
faint crease on top front corner, and a touch of edgewear (but no
spine crease). Contains the title story and “The Red Hawk.” $3.

LP2580. Kurtz, Katherine. Lammas Night. Ballantine Books, 1983. First
edition paperback original, a Fine- copy with wear at points and along
edge, otherwise new and unread. A really nice copy of this Druids vs.
    Nazis PBO. $20.

LP2581. Lovecraft, H.P. The Lurking Fear and Other Stories. Beagle
Books, 1971. Paperback reprint, a Very Good copy with spine creasing,

1/4″ blue checkmark at the top of the blurb page, otherwise nice and
square. Introduction by Stan Lee. “An Instant Collector’s item:
Spidey’s first Full-Length Novel!” Just as I was finishing up and
listing this I heard that Len Wein had died. $5.

LP2584. Wilson, Robert Anton. Schrodinger’s Cat III: The Homing
Pigeons. Pocket Books, 1981. First edition paperback original, a Very
Good copy with spine lean, small creases to front corners and general
wear. The third book in the Schrodinger’s Cat trilogy (although
Wilson’s Caveat Lector at the beginning declares they can be read in
any order). Firsts of this do not seem to be as common as those for
    the Illuminatus trilogy. $10.

  • Overview of Lawrence Person’s Library: 2017 Edition

    Thursday, August 31st, 2017

I decided updated pictures of my library were long overdue, so I took pictures of all my personal library bookshelves (as opposed to Lame Excuse Books stock) with my iPhone, which seems to do a better job than my old digital camera anyway.

I tried to make the pics close and large enough that you could read the titles (which is, I think, one of the main points of photographing your library), though that’s not always the case. (Click to embiggen any of these.)

I’ve listed very brief high points, but at some point I want to do several more comprehensive posts, probably broken up by letter (A, B, etc.) which will go into more detail and show individual books. But if I did that here I’d probably break your browser!

As usual, all of these are Fine first edition hardbacks in Fine dust jackets unless otherwise stated.

Where you see a dust jacket sitting on top of other books, I was reading that book when I took these pictures.

This is just the fiction. I’ll get to the non-fiction, graphic novels, art books, science fiction reference books, etc. at a later date.

Not all the pictures are perfect, and I may swap them out for better ones as time permits.

    Oversized Fiction

These are all the hardback fiction books that were simply too big to fit anywhere else.

I have a fairly ridiculous amount of signed Roger Zelazny first editions, manuscripts, etc., thanks in no small part to two very extensive purchases of Zelazny material. Though I would like to trade up my imperfect Nine Princes in Amber and my signed, imperfect Lord of Light, all my other Zelazny hardbacks are Fine/Fine copies, and most signed, including Creatures of Light and Darkness, The Dream Master, one of 200 signed, hardback copies of For a Breath I Tarry (which, since it has a number of blank pages in the back, I’ve had signed by some 60-70 other science fiction writers, etc.), one of 35 signed hardback copies of The Last Defender of Camelot, one of only 21 lettered, hardback copies of Kovacs’ The Ides of Octember: A Pictorial Bibliography of Roger Zelazny with a Zelazny signature sheet bound in, etc. Those binders you see contain original Zelazny manuscripts, some proof copies, some typescripts, and some hand-written, including The Changing Land, “The Last Defender of Camelot”, “Unicorn Variations”, Dilvish the Damned, Knight of Shadows, etc. (Upstairs, in the non-fiction section, I have Roger Zelazny’s professional correspondence archive in two large binders.)

  • (Ellison, Harlan) Slusser, George Edgar. Harlan Ellison: Unrepentant Harlequin. Borgo Press, 1977. First edition chapbook, a Near Fine- copy with rubbing and a sticker pull to front cover. Inscribed by Ellison, with a drawing, in two colors: (In blue ink) “For Daniel Traeger The “Mom” (in rust-colored ink) That’s supposed to/say “The Man” — But/I messed up. Sorry/Harlan Ellison/”The Inept.” Currey (1979), page 180. Bought for $1.98 at Half Price Books. Oddly enough, I recently bought another signed copy of this, but since that one has a better cover and this one a better inscription, I’m inclined to keep both…
