Recent Book Auction Results of Note

You may already have noticed that I buy a lot of books. Many I buy direct from the publisher (many of which I also sell copies of through Lame Excuse Books), some I buy from other book dealers, either off the Internet or at cons, some I buy off eBay (although that’s a lot less common since they drove away a goodly portion of the most interesting items by hiking fees into the stratosphere in their effort to turn themselves into an inferior Amazon clone), and a few I buy through auction houses, like PBA Galleries or Heritage Auctions.

Heritage just completed their 2010 June Signature Rare Books Auction, which, while not focused on science fiction the way the The Ventura Collection auction back in 2007 was, still had a number of notable science fiction and fantasy books up for auction, including a few titles made of Unobtanium. The interesting thing is that the three most notable fantasy titles didn’t sell:

I thought the price estimate on the Lord of the Rings set was unrealistically aggressive, as decent sets in dust jacket can be had in the $10,000-20,000 range. Nice firsts of The Hobbit in dust jacket are very rare, but I’m seeing a few copies of that available in the $20,000 range as well. (If memory serves, several years ago L. W. Currey had, I think, a signed Fine/Near Fine+ copy in dust jacket listed for $68,000.)

What does all this mean? Who know? Up at the very highest end of the book market, auction prices can be extremely volatile depending on who’s bidding. Maybe the prices were just too high. Or maybe the big money is sitting out in anticipation of prices dropping due to a double-dip recession.

ABE Books Doesn’t Know Dick

I stopped dealing books on ABE Books eight years ago because it was obvious they wanted to nickle-and-dime dealers to death, as well as force us to sign up for third party re-sale programs that were previously voluntary. Plus the people in charge didn’t strike me as the smartest knives in the toolbox.

Speaking of ABE stupidity, over at SF Signal I noticed this link to an ABE article on the most valuable first editions of Philip K. Dick. Below some boilerplate on Philip K. Dick’s life (generally accurate, but nothing anyone couldn’t have written by skimming Wikipedia or Clute & Nichols) there’s a list of “Top 15 Most Collectible Philip K. Dick titles sold on AbeBooks”. The problem is, anyone with a knowledge of Philip K. Dick first editions who looks at the pictures accompanying those fifteen titles can tell the people who put them up didn’t have a freaking clue, as many don’t match the edition they’re illustrating:

  1. The picture accompanying Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is not the Doubleday first edition of 1968 described, but a later UK edition. An example of the real dust jacket for the first edition (albeit an Ex-Library copy) from my own collection is shown below.

  2. The picture accompanying the listing for a UK Gollancz edition signed by Dick could not have been the edition Dick signed, since it is part of the Gollancz Masterworks editions published about two decades after Dick’s death. FWIW, my copy of the true Putnum first edition is shown below.

  3. The edition of Valis shown in the image is not that of the Kerosina Press lettered hardback edition, but the more recent trade paperback reprint. (I have a copy of the slipcased numbered edition signed by Kim Stanley Robinson, but not one of the lettered copies with the Dick signature tipped in.) A scan of the cover of the Kerosina edition is shown below.

  4. The copy of Dr. Bloodmoney shown is not the Gregg Press hardback described, but the true paperback original (PBO) edition mentioned in passing. (All a scan would show is the usual Gregg Press plain green cloth.)
  5. The copy of The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick shown is not one of the 1/100 deluxe editions with Dick’s signature tipped in, but rather the regular unsigned edition (which is also the edition I have).
  6. The picture of Solar Lottery shown is not the Gregg Press (first US hardback) edition described, but the PBO. (Again, all a scan would show is the usual Gregg Press plain green cloth.)
  7. The copy of Confessions of a Crap Artist shown is not the Entwhistle hardback described, but one of the trade paperback editions (I own the hardback first, a scan of which is shown below, but I don’t own the paperback, so I can’t tell from sight whether this is one of the essentially simultaneous first edition in wrappers, or the second printing.)

So, out of fifteen books, seven have the wrong picture. That’s pretty piss-poor for an article on collectible books. Then again, ABE frequently does things in a piss-poor manner. Anyone with any familiarity with Dick first editions would have spotted the discrepancies between the text and pictures right away.

And when I said “generally accurate,” there is a significant error in describing why Dick’s works are so valuable:

Because of his relative obscurity throughout much of his life, most of Dick’s works received modest initial print runs. As a result, signed copies of those titles remain very scarce, making Dick one of the most collectible names in modern science fiction.

No, Dick’s early PBOs had runs in the hundreds of thousands (as did most SF paperbacks of that era), and the print run for Dick’s hardback books from mainstream SF publishers, while modest by the standards of bestsellers, were not any smaller than the runs companies like Doubleday did for their other SF writers. Signed Dick books are particularly valuable because he didn’t go to a lot of conventions or do terribly many signings. Also, many of his works published as paperback originals had later small hardback print runs from either small press or UK publishing houses, but they were not initial print runs, they were later editions for the collector or library markets, and they were done not because Dick was obscure, but because he was quite popular among SF readers.

For the record, of the 15 Dick titles they list, I have the first hardback editions of 12 of them (though not in the signed states that made many of the copies listed in the ABE piece so pricey); I lack Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said, the Gregg Press Dr. Bloodmoney and the Rich & Cowen World of Chance, which was the first hardback edition of Solar Lottery. I do, however, have a copy of the Cape first hardback edition of The Penultimate Truth, which is rarer than about half the books on their list…

Updated 3/17/10: At least someone at ABE seems to have been paying attention, as many of the wrong images have now been replaced, and the text I singled out as erroneous has been rewritten.

My Book-Hunting Trip to Archer City and Points East (and New Acquisitions Found There)

Since I attended a family event in the Dallas Metroplex over the 1/15/10-1/17/10 weekend, I took the opportunity to do something I had long wanted to do: Visit Larry McMurtry’s Booked-Up book store (actually spread across four buildings) in Archer City.

The drive itself (a solid five hours) completely redefined my “ass end of nowhere” scale. It’s pretty far away from anything else, so only serious bibliophiles need apply.

As for the store itself, there’s a huge amount of stuff for a general book hunter to look for (especially in areas like pamphlets, foreign language books, Texana, literary criticism, and probably several others), but not a whole lot of SF/F/H. I found about $50 worth of stuff, most of it in the general fiction section.

Then I drove to Recycled Books in Denton, and bought $1,200+ worth of stuff (and that was after my dealer discount).

By contrast, I found very little of interest at the main Half Price Books just of 75 in Dallas; all they seemed to have were multiple copies of very common titles. (I did a lot better when they were in a smaller building just down the block, the one with the boat-shaped section in the middle of the store.) Maybe their non-fiction section is more worth browsing.

Below is the list of books I’m adding to my own library, including items from Recycled Books, Booked Up, and a three different Half Price Books. All of these are Fine/Fine first edition hardback copies, unless otherwise noted:

So, if you’re going to be book shopping in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, by all means visit Recycled Books, which seems to be the best used bookstore in Texas. Visit Booked Up if you have the time to drive out that way, but the SF selection is fairly poor.

Lawrence Person’s Library of Science Fiction First Editions

I’ve been meaning to take pictures of my library for quite a while, and I finally got around to doing it. These are just the ones in my fiction library; I haven’t taken pictures of the non-fiction up in my office yet.

I started collecting hypermodern (i.e., post-Neuromancer) science fiction first editions in the late 1980s, concentrating on hardbacks of works and authors I felt were important. I have essentially completed that collection (though I am always adding new books as they come out), and am now trying to amass a collection of first editions of every important post-WWII work of science fiction, as well as selected fantasy and horror authors, which should keep me busy quite a while. Save one Stephen King ultralimited I bought pre-publication, I have never spent more than $400 for any single book (and precious few over $300). I won’t settle for later printings or copies with corner-clipped dust jackets, but my price ceiling has forced me to settle for ex-library copies of a handful of key works (for example, Dune and The Man in the High Castle). When I refer to an “imperfect” first, it’s generally (but not always) an Ex-Library copy. The rest tend to be Fine/Fine or gently read copies, though with a bit more flexibility for older titles. I am one “difficult” book away from having a complete collection of Hugo winners, and save the most recent one, have a complete collection of Nebula Winners, as well as many World Fantasy and Bram Stoker award winners, plus a smattering of literary firsts and prize winners picked up when I chanced across them.

Mine is a very extensive SF collection, but far from the largest or most valuable, even in private hands. I’m sure there are many old fans whose libraries would (or may still) put mine to shame. Before being broken up, the legendary collections of Sam Moskowitz and Forrest J. Ackerman would have easily blown mine away. Although David Hartwell has started selling pieces of his, from talking to him I’m sure what remains of David’s collection still exceeds mine by a good measure. Kurt Baty has assembled very close to a complete collection of all science fiction works ever published, but has not concentrated on first editions. Given the number of auctions I’ve lost to him over the years, I’m sure Larry Bigman’s collection leaves mine in the shade. Allen Lewis’ collection of hypermodern science fiction has a breadth that far exceeds my own. Mike Berro and Jerry Hewett have collections at least comparable to my own (and far more complete when it comes to Jack Vance). If I had to guess, my collection might sneak into the top 50 in private hands, but that may be too high.

Unless otherwise noted, all the volumes listed under highlights are either the true first edition, or the first hardback edition (frequently British) when the true first was a paperback original. If the UK edition preceded the American, then the true first is the one I have, unless otherwise indicated.

These pictures were taken with a Kodak EasyPic V803 and edited in iPhoto. The gaps visible on shelves are what I call “expansion joints,” and are there so I can add new acquisitions. Caveats: I don’t have a tripod, and I don’t know how to do keystone correction for camera angle (especially apparent on the eight-high bookshelves). Still, an acute observer should be able to pic out numerous individual volumes…
